Meteor Blitz by Alley Labs is a fast paced, free ranging, meteor blasting shooter. The formula for this type of game is pretty tried and true, and it is very well executed in this iteration. You control a small spaceship, tasked with destroying all of the asteroids, mines, and other baddies in your space. The game features dual joystick touch screen controls, one to control the direction your ship is traveling, the other to control the direction of your firing. The other on screen buttons control boosts and weapon type, and a shake produces a bomb. I highly recommend taking the included tutorial before beginning to play; the controls are easy to pick up and intuitive, but the quick introduction helps.

As you destroy your targets you collect small rings that are used to purchase upgrades to your systems, which include lasers, ice beams, fire blasts, speed boosts, shields, and more. The controls for the game are surprisingly responsive; I often have trouble with onscreen joysticks, preferring some sort of tactile feedback, however both sticks respond exactly as you would expect. You can even calibrate the shake necessary to release a bomb. The graphics for the game, while not particularly complex, are well executed with rich backgrounds and well mapped textures. The music is classic arcade, with a modern techno quality. Both Arcade and Survival modes are engaging, and are good for several hours of game play. The game is regularly $0.99, however it is available for free today only on the Amazon App Store.
