If you are at all like me, you find the advantages of cloud computing to be quite attractive—Access to you files on multiple devices; protection against loss; more space on your device. The glaring problem for me has always been the fact that my data is at a remote location, vulnerable to hacking, corruption, and theft. Western Digital may have solved the issue for us all with its personal cloud storage device, the My Book Live. Unlike traditional cloud storage options available from Dropbox, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, this cloud stores your data in a My Book Live hard drive attached to your home network.
The element that makes this new device pertinent to Android and different than other currently available networked drives is the ease of remote access, made possible by Western Digital’s WD 2go and WD Photos apps, available for Android OS 2.1 and up (As well as iOS, but who cares about that, right?). The WD 2go Android app supports most major file types, including Microsoft Word documents, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations so you can easily view your files. It also enables you to download those files for offline access, as well as built in email, sharing, and printing support. All of this is protected by a 4 digit pass code. WD Photos offers a variety of features, including access to all of your stored photos, the ability to instantly upload your photos to your personal cloud, and numerous viewing and filtering options.
The drives are available now, and come in 1TB ($119.99) 2TB ($199.99) and 3TB ($249.99) varieties.
