Android for Intel- The Future is Now!

Intel has just announced that it will bring Android 2.3 Gingerbread to its Atom E6xx series processors in January 2012. Intel has been vying for its share of the mobile market via Android for some time now; however Intel’s announcement could alternatively signal Android’s entrance and simultaneous dominance of the much larger non-mobile market. The Intel E-series of CPU’s, which are media and embedded focused, include the code named upcoming Menlow, Oaktrail, Moorestown, and Cedar Trail processors. While optimized versions of Android already power devices such as Google TV and certain dual-boot tablets and laptops, Intel claims that this latest series of processors are not smartphone oriented- Intel has aimed the new processors at retail, fitness equipment, digital signage, and in-vehicle systems. Imagine being able to:

-Install apps on your treadmill to optimize your workout;

-Track your diet and groceries on your Android powered refrigerator;

-Utilize third-party navigation, entertainment, or economization apps on your car;

People have talked about these kinds of ideas for years now; however the missing elements have always been computing power, proliferation of compatible technology, and a rich application environment. Intel’s powerful, power-sipping processors, when paired with Android’s dominance of the mobile market and open development environment, may help us see that future a little bit sooner.

We’re interested in what kind of innovative uses you can imagine in the soon-to-come Android-Intel powered world. What kinds of apps, equipment, and integration do you want to see? We invite you to discuss in the comment section below.
