How did you get into developing apps?

Arno den Hond:

Before developing on Android, I have done a lot of J2ME programming. Last year I ordered an ADP1 and just starting playing around with it. After polishing the results of my experiments I decided to publish them.

What was your inspiration for developing this app?

Arno den Hond:

Norton Commander. Thats an antique file manager for DOS which shows 2 panels containing files and folders on top and a single line for command input at the bottom. When I heard about the QSB feature in Android 1.6 I realized it could be used for both exposing of existing data and inputing of new data.

How long did it take to develop the app?

Arno den Hond:

About 3 days. Google has not officially published the workings of the calendar content provider so I had to search around in the source code of Android itself to figure out how to save new calendar entries. Also, it was a bit tricky to make the fuzzy matching algorithm which tries to make sense of the calendar entry is being described (in various different formats).

Are there any hidden features to the app?

Arno den Hond:

No I would even say the normal features are sort of hidden :) First, the QSB needs to be ‘trained’ into knowing that the options from Search Calendar should be shown on the initial suggestion results list. Before it has been trained, an extra click on “more results” is required. Also when starting the app itself, it only shows usage instructions. Using the app does not involve any user interface. (which is actually the strength of the app)

Do you have any future plans for this app?

Arno den Hond:

Not for this particular app but I believe there must be many other apps which could accept new data through QSB. If anybody has a good suggestion please let me know!

Android App Review Source:

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?

Arno den Hond:

Yes I am always thinking about new apps. Currently I am working on a 3D game which is not exactly my area of expertise yet. It could take some weeks before a beta version is published to the market.

I have Arno’s Search Tweet app and it’s great. I had an issue with the version of Twidroid I was running and he had a solution on the marketplace in 2 or 3 hours. He has turned the QSB into the go to place on my G1. It’s great to see him get the publicity, Keep up the good work!
