How did you get into developing apps?

Carnival Comics:

Carnival Comics published it’s first comic book “Funhouse Of Horrors” in October of 2008. As a company it is great to reach as many people as possible, and after putting such hard work into our titles, the printed approach alone left us wanting more. So we turned our comics into apps and now “Carnival Of Souls” and “Funhouse Of Horrors” are reaching the masses all over the world! Carnival Comics has the distinct honor of having the only Motion Comic on the Andriod Market Place. A motion comic is a comic that has voice over, music and motion pictures. We as a company are very proud to be able to say this. Another note as to the success of our entering to new world of apps. We were recently featured in Entertainment Weekly’s Halloween Issue. Carnival Comics was #4 on the “Must List!” A great digital page was shown from “Funhouse Of Horrors.” You can read the article on EW’s website here:

What was your inspiration for developing this app?

Carnival Comics:

With the digital comics, we wanted to make an app that gave the reader an easy to use experience, while not taking away from the story at all. So we focus on each panel of the comic book and re-letter the pages to give the reader the best font size possible. The end result has created a whole new style of reading comics. Digital Comics are the future and we are so thrilled to be a part of it! With the motion comics, we don’t have to worry about any fonts or readable text. So we are free to let the viewer sit back and enjoy the Voice Over artists, music and the story.

How long did it take to develop the app?

Carnival Comics:

It takes so many steps to make this happen. I hope everyone who sees these comic book apps realize the hard work that goes into them. First you have to go back to the beginning. It all starts with a great story. Making an issue of a comic takes 6 months to a year for us to complete. Then, when we went to making apps, it was like completely re-editing the book. You want the viewer / reader to get the best experience possible, so again re-lettering every page and focusing on every panel. Sometimes it also involves new backgrounds and scenery. With our Motion Comics, it can take a year or more to do one book. You have to go into the studio with great voice-over artists and work hard to recapture the story in voice. Then with our titles, we use background music from our “Carnival Music” division. Then you have to have the motion graphics done in flash. From there, we had to get the motion comic chapters to a size that would allow them to be downloaded in a reasonable amount of time. We made our apps with “Export / Save to SD Card” features, so to allow the user to store the app. We also created our “Big Top Reader” so that you can collect all our titles and play / access them from the SD Card.

Are there any hidden features to the app?

Carnival Comics:

With the Motion Comics you do have the “Export / Save to SD Card” to save the app. Click menu while the motion comic is playing and you get a “Pause” option. Click to the home button to exit the app. With the Digital Comics you just slide from page to page with a finger swipe. Click the menu button and you get a “Navigation” option, which allows you to go to any page of the app instantly. You also have the “Export / Save to SD Card” to save the app.

Do you have any future plans for this app?

Carnival Comics:

Carnival Comics plans to continue to bring more chapters of our Funhouse Of Horrors and Carnival Of Souls Digital Comics, as they have now become international hits! We hope to bring the Motion Comics of Funhouse Of Horrors very soon. We have completed the Voice over tracks and are putting together the motion animation now.

Do you plan to develop any new apps? If so when can we expect to see them in the Market?

Carnival Comics:

We have a new app that we just received our “Patent Pending” status on. It involves our “Carnival Music” division. But you have to wait until this app takes to the center ring!
